Text &
Materials
|
The course content will be available
mostly online. There is an optional, but highly
recommended textbook
that parallels and extends the online lessons (if you prefer to read
online, then you do not need to get the book). Some interactive
material is only online, so you will need access both the book and
online material. CCSF will provide any additional handouts, access to
software, tools and materials that are needed for the class. For labs, you will either submit screenshots of a simulation and/or fill out pages from a lab manual that will be made available online in PDF format. There will be some special projects to do on paper or submit online as HTML, Word, or Text documents. Optional Text (also available online a few pages at a time): Routing Protocols and Concepts, CCNA Exploration Companion Guide ISBN: 1587132060 / ISBN 13: 9781587132063 (December 2007) 640 pages. |

Methods
|
This class is a Hybrid class. This means that some
of the time we meet in-person and some of the time we meet
online. There are 11 chapters that students will be expected to read outside of class. You usually read two chapters per week (about 80 pages). You also take Chapter Exams (Cisco calls them "Assessments") & do most Labs outside of class. The on-campus class meetings are a combination of lectures, discussion, small group exercises and some hands-on practice to solidify and deepen the course material. During the weeks when there is no in-person meeting, the lecture materials and discussions will be online. Course Management Tools: We use two: Insight (http://insight.ccsf.edu) is the CCSF Learning Management System that we will use primarily to communicate online between face-to-face meetings. (Insight can also deliver lessons, assignments, and exams online, but for us these are mostly provided by the online Cisco Curriculum.) The Cisco Networking Academy (http://cisco.netacad.net) provides a website for students taking its courses. This website delivers the lessons and exams that we will use in this class. It also contains simulation activities to download & labs in PDF form that you download & use. The Cisco website does not have enough ways to communicate with students between classes. Exams: The Chapter & Final Exams are given online. Due to copyright issues, it is not allowed to copy the Cisco online exams in any form. We use the Chapter Exams as a learning tool, so you get up to 3 tries on each chapter & can check your answers. The online Final Exam is given in a proctored environment (ie, in class), and you cannot check your answers. At the end, you also need to fill out an online Course Feedack form before you can "graduate" to the next class. Weekly Effort: We usually say you need to budget 10 hours per week for a full semester for a 3 unit class in a "solid" subject. This is one of those kind of classes. But we do it in 1/2 semester, so plan on giving it up to 20 hrs per week to succeed in this class. Other major tools: PacketTracer: Cisco network simulation program, is an important tool for the course. Cloud 218 Cisco Lab: hands-on access to real equipment. C218 Console Server: (147.144.51.244) console connections to any lab router from any lab workstation (on campus only). |

Class Attendance & Other Policies |
Attendance:
Your attendance & participation in the class is
important to us but we will not take attendance each class. Your
basic participation is measured by coming to class & logging into
WebCT each week. There will be one or more module exams scheduled
each week. Any
student who falls behind two or more weeks without prior arrangement
may
be
dropped
by the instructor. However, under normal circumstances, we
do NOT
usually
drop students from the class rolls. It is the student’s responsibility
to file the paperwork needed to drop or withdraw from this class. Deadlines:
There are weekly deadlines for taking Chapter Assessments &
submitting Labs online. Assessments & Labs can be
submitted late
(unless they are discussed in the class), but there may be a deduction
of 10% per week. CCSF Software Poicy:
Software
in use in the lab and printed resource materials are copyrighted with
all
rights reserved except when explicitly described as public domain.
Under
copyright laws, these items may not be copied, photocopied, reproduced
or reduced to any electronic medium, in whole or in part. Any violation
or attempt to violate copyright laws may result in disciplinary
action. The basic guideline is to be respectful of each other. How to do this? For online communication, follow the guidelines of Internet Etiquette. One important guidline is to be sure to re-read a message before you post it. It can help to ask yourself: Would be comfortable saying what you are writing to someone face-to-face? Guidelines on how often to speak (online or in class): If you are someone who contributes frequently, then after you answer some questions, please "count to 10" before answering others. This is so that others get a chance to participate. We all process information at different speeds at different times. If you are someone who is normally quiet, then please speak up and take a chance. We would like to hear your voices too. We can discuss other guidelines too. |
