Ethical Hacking and Network Defense

Course description:

3 Units. Students learn how hackers attack computers and networks, and how to protect systems from such attacks, using both Windows and Linux systems. Students will learn legal restrictions and ethical guidelines, and will be required to obey them. Students will perform many hands-on labs, both attacking and defending, using port scans, footprinting, exploiting Windows and Linux vulnerabilities, buffer overflow exploits, SQL injection, privilege escalation, Trojans, and backdoors.

Spring 2012 - Monday, January 17, 2012 through Friday, May 25, 2012

 

Location:

Online: Students get lectures, projects, exams and forum (discussion board) online.

Office hour: Fridays, 12:00 – 1:00 at C203/203A by appointment through Insight

Mandatory 1: Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 4:00– 5:30pm.

S37 at 50 Phelan Ave. Ocean campus, City College of San Francisco.

Mandatory 2: Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 11:30-1:00pm.

Access will be denied if a student misses going to one of the orientations without a waiver. Students who live outside of the Bay Area with the proof of address may email the instructors with mmercyho@gmail.com to waive this requirement. We recommend that you come to the orientation no matter how far you live, because the course contains many projects with different operating systems. It would be much easier to understand the procedures of those projects. The instructor will distribute some CDs for the projects in the orientation.

1 Hands-On Ethical Hacking and Network Defense by Michael T. Simpson --ISBN: 1-4354-8609-9 I recommend that you get the book early before the class starts.

2. Optional: CNIT 123: Ethical Hacking and Network Defense -- Lecture Notes and Projects (Fall 2010 Revision) by Sam Bowne (buy it at the CCSF Bookstore) All of the contents of this book will be online in the course.

You will have 10 days after the semester starts to buy the text book. The first quiz won’t start until the second week. However,shipping may take up to two weeks, so I suggest that you order it before the school starts.

Grading Policy

Midterm is based on Projects(40%), Quizzes(40%) & Participation(20%)

Final is based on Projects(20%), Quizzes(20%), Midterm(40%), Final Exam (10%) & Participation(10%)

Participation is based on how many times you participate on the bulletin board. You are supposed to post or reply at least 1 messages each week and read all of the messages on the BB. You need to introduce yourself during the frist 2 weeks.
